20s Dress Code

If you've seen the movie The Great Gatsby, then you'll already have a fair idea of the dress code from the '20s. For instance, men wore the well-known double-breasted suits and Homburg hats, while women wore the typical straight dresses, boas, and bobbed hairstyles.

30s Clothing

The '30s were characterized by a worldwide economic crisis, resulting in a noticeable separation between flamboyant evening wear and functional day clothes. The most striking trends of this period were the more tailored clothing for women, and the thin mustaches and hairstyles slicked with brilliantine for men.

'40s Clothing

The '40s were dominated by World War II, and so there was little room for fashion during this period. Raw materials, including textiles, were scarce, leading to an increased emphasis on functionality over aesthetics. Garments were often altered or recycled multiple times.

'50s Clothing

The '50s were characterized by a period of reconstruction and increasing prosperity. More and more people had money to buy fabrics or clothes again, and it showed! Clothing items were adorned with cheerful details, and the use of color increased again in both women's and men's clothing.

'60s Clothing

During the '60s, for the first time, a clear separation emerged between clothing for young people and adults. Youth increasingly followed their own path, and this was reflected in the outfits. Key trends from the '60s included Mod fashion and Hippie fashion.

'70s Clothing

If you've ever watched "That 70's Show", you'll certainly have an idea of the dress codes from the '70s. This period saw the birth of the disco fashion trend, for example. Popular items were bell-bottom pants, platform shoes, halter tops with sparkles, and the so-called go-go boots.

'80s Clothing

During the '80s, various dress codes came and went. The main trends were neon-colored aerobic outfits, 'power dressing', punk fashion, 'new romanticism', and fashion influences from celebrities like Madonna, Michael Jackson, and even Princess Diana.

'90s Clothing

If you've ever watched an episode of "Saved by the Bell", you'll undoubtedly have an idea of typical '90s outfits. The main fashion trends of this period were grunge fashion, the "school girl" look, and typical hip hop clothing.

2000 - 2010 Clothing

The years 2000 to 2010 are known for a blend of fashion trends. Not only were there "new" fashion trends, but there was also a continual return to fashion trends from previous decades. One of the most striking trends was the popularity of "it items" - the absolute must-haves of the moment.
